Evaluation Q2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
It was important for me to ensure that the album cover and the advert poster to reflect the music video and have the same tone of colours. The  album cover captures that autumn atmosphere. In the lyrics, he says:

"I'm falling to pieces..."
...and with this, i was inspired as these words reminded me of how leaves change colour and fall during the autumn time in the year. The tone of colours used when i edited the music video is similar to my album cover therefore there is consistency of house style which creates a very effective combination between my music video and album cover. The moo generated from the music video in some scenes are also reflected from the album cover. The sadness and the change in his life a represented by the change of nature through time.

The digipak advert the full image of the leaf. The advert is advertising the album so it needs to grab the audience's attention and have an image of the album, so i thought i should use the album cover's original image before i edited it, use the same font of the album and include the date the album would be out and also quotes and ratings of the album by magazines and record companies.

Evaluation Q1

I have done a second set of 9 framed shot however, this time looking at actual music videos.

Shot 1: This shot shows link between the lyrics and the actions. The words go as follows: "she ask me for time" and he reaches out and looks at his watch. Craig David- 7 days

Shot 2: This shot represents an artist as a record company would want their artist to be represented. The singer is Alicia Keys famous and known for playing the piano in her songs and writing heart felt songs. In this shot Alicia is sitting outside in the snow playing her piano which is white. She is wearing a long coat and the whole shot shows her as a delicate, angelic, beautiful person. Alicia Keys- If i ain't got you

Shot 3: This shot represents a rock genre as the band is singing and using a range of instruments at the same time. There instruments used such as electric guitar and drums are usually associated with this genre.

Shot 4: This shot shows inter-textual reference as the song is inspire by Shakespeare play Romeo an Juliet. The lyrics often relate to the play. Taylor Swift- Love story

Shot 5: This Shot shows use of camera angles as a high angle shot shows framing the singer as a vulnerable person. Taylor Swift- Tear drops on my guitar

Shot 6: This shot shows use of lighting as a spot light is used to capture the singer at a side angle focusing on his facial expression. Blue Ft Elton John- Sorry seems to be the hardest word.

Shot 7: This shot shows the use of mis-en-scene as a long shot shows the artist in his room which is filled with props you expect to  find in a bedroom such as personal belongings. This sets the atmosphere and gives the audience an idea of the personality of the artist.

Shot 8/9: These are shots  that can be related to my music video and are where some of my inspiration came from. Shot eight shows the artist before an after he broke up with his partner. I could relate this to my music video because there is a black and white scene of when the couple were together an where happy and the rest shows the singer as lonely and heartbroken. Shot 9 shows a female character walking around New York city getting on with her daily routine. There is a scene were the female character in my music video is walking around the city doing the same thing.

Evaluation Q3

A2 Music video Pitch Group 2 from Sidney Stringer on Vimeo.

I have designed a questionnaire for my music video to given out to people and to also be emailed to others if they prefer to do it online. The questionnaire is based on the music video and the digipak. I  have included a link of where the music video can be found and images of my digipak.

Question one: for this question i asked the audience if they thought that this video appeals to its target audience. Most said yes and agreed that the video would appeal more to females because of the singer in the video.

Question Two: for this question, i wanted to find out what people liked from the music video. Most people replied that they liked the story line and it was clear what it was about and what was going on. They also said that it was "emotional"and lots of people would "connect" with it.

Question Three: For this question, i wanted to ask for the audience's suggestions of how the video could be improved. The main reply to this question was that they would like to see the couple together as a flash back and that there should be more black and white flash backs like the one in the beginning.

Question Four: This question was based on the ancillary task which was to produce a digipak. i wanted to know if they felt that there was a relation between the album, advertisement and the music video. Below are some of the comments.

Question Five: i asked the audience what they would change or would like to see on the album cover/digipak if it were to be re-made. A lot of people left this question un-answerd but one
person suggested that they would like to see the actual artist on the cover in a dark room for example. Another person said: I would like to see the setting where the singer was but the room to be left empty with just the props and the guitar.

Before we made the video we pitched our ideas to the class which was important for us to find out what they think

Overall, people liked the music video and said that it was a good effort made by us.

Evaluation Q4

Above are all the programs i have used and how I have used them. Each program had a contribution to my final product and i have learned a lot whilst using them.

Progress Review (LOG)

08/09/2010: Media Terms
Today I have analysed media terms and defined them. I have tried to give examples to go with each term so that it is easier for me to understand and remember them. Learinng the right terminology and using them will help me get the higher marks for my courswork and exams.
16/10/2010: Analysing Music Video
Today i have analysed Jason Mraz's- I'm yours music video. I have never analysed a music video before but i really enjoyed doing this because it made me think about how it was created. It's important for me to look at more music videos as i will be creating one. By doing this i will be collecting ideas for the concept of my video, editing and camera shots/angles.
From the video I analysed I learned that the lyrics and the actions in the video relate which makes it easy for the audience to understand the concept.
14/10/2010: Elements of Pre-Production
I  have analyzed elements of pre production

18/10/2010: Style of video
We did a mind map showing our ideas for video. i have looked at other videos similar to the kind of styles i'm looking for.

24/10/2010: Mood-board
I made a mood board by collecting images from the internet that represent what will be included in the video, ideas of props, scenes ect... The mood board allowed me to build a clear image of the style of our video.
To make the mood board i used Powerpoint and uploaded it on to my blog.

22/10/2010: Concept Ideas and Song Choice
The concept is based on a young man singing about a breakup/heartache. During the video he and she will be doing what they usually do daily; walk through a park, eat/drink at restaurant/cafe, sit on a bench. The video will also cut at some parts to show him sitting down and singing whilst playing his acoustic guitar at home.

As a group we really like the idea and plan to add or make changes as we go on whilst making the production.
We really like the idea of stop motion. This is a series of images taken of every move and manipulated using props and meterials to put together movement. We've looked at "Her morning elegance" by Oren Lavin a song that is famous for its video and technique. As we know its quiet complicated and many pictures need to be taken, we will probably include few seconds of it in our video.
I have written about elements i need to take into consideration before starting the production. This includes:
  • Finance
  • Time Scale
  • Personnel
  • Facilities
  • Material
  • Contributors
  • Locations
  • Codes of Practice and Regulations
It was important for me to look at these factors and consider things that might casue problems and affect the prouction and how i will avoide these situations.

Final Song
Our final chosen song in the end was The Script "Break Even" this song is perfect for our concept and the treatment of the video. We brainstormed ideas of songs and chose the best one as a group.
30/10/2010: Story Board
I put together a story board for our video so that we know what happens at every scene. It makes it easier for us to know what we should be doing and to get a picture of what each scene would look like before we start filming.
01/11/10: Anamatics
today i have used window's movie maker to upload my storyboard sketches and mp3 sound of our chosen song. i did this because i wanted to see how the video would look once it is made. I was very impressed with the result and it helped me figure out which areas we  need to develop more and what to include and not include in the music video.

03/11/2010: Lip-synching & Camera Shot
We realized that it is very difficult for people in the music video to lip synch in time with the song as well as acting and doing facial expression and also moving at the same time. So we had a go at lip synching as a class. We split into two groups and while one preformed the other group had a go at filming from different angles. It was great way to experience using the video cameras, learning when to zoom in and the best angles and at the same time appreciating how hard it could be for actors to lip synch.
05/11/2010:  Cast Video
We took pictures of our cast; Robin and Priya so we can include it in our blog and explain we we have decided  to use them for our music video. We used a still image digital camera to take the pictures. Then we had the idea of taking the pictures and putting together a stop motion short video of our cast as practice. I used Windows Movie Maker to make the short stop motion video and uploaded it onto Vimeo account made by one of our group members and embedded it onto our blogs.
07/11/2010 Clothing and make up
we took pictures of the clothing we wanted Priya to wear. We asked robin to wear smart casual clothes because we wanted him to be represented as an adult, but with Priya we wanted her to look fashionable as there would be more focus on her so we looked at different outfits she had and took some pictures of it.

08/11/10  Filming Robin's Scene
Today we filmed Robin's scene in the theater. Filming was a success because we made a time table for when to do what.

11/11/10 Filming Priya's Scene
Today we filmed outside in Priya's scene. It was easier filming this scene because all we had to do was walk around town and film priya walking and pretending to be getting on with her day.

14/11/2010 Premiere Intro
today i have looked at tutorials for adobe premiere because it is the program i will be using to edit the video

18/11/10 Editing
today we started editing and putting our video together, it took  a while because we had to find the clips we were going to use.

28/11/10 Final Music Video
today we rendered and uploaded our music  video. We also made plans on how to get audience feedback.

30/11/10 Digipak Research
I looked for digipak ideas online to help me design mine. I looked at the link between them and the planned mine.

14/12/10 Album
Today i have taken pictures and i used Photoshop to edit my images for the album.

23/12/10 Advert
I have completed my album so i have made a start on my magazine advertisement for the digipak.

08/01/11: Evaluation Process
Today  i started working on my evaluation for my product

Completed DigiPak; Magazine Advert

When i was creating a mood board for our music video, the main feeling i wanted to show was feeling of autumn. to me, this time of year represents changes and the colours of nature are beautiful. For our music video, we edited the colours into warm colours to portray this feeling and i have tried to keep that theme running through to the album and advertisement. I wanted the cover and advert to be simple.

I have created a magazine advertisement for the album using Photoshop. The purpose of the advertisement is to promote the sale of the album so it was necessary for me to follow a house style. for the advertisement, i enlarge a section of the same image used on the inside of the album itself. It's clear that the colours are consistent and i have also ensured to use the same fonts and colours used on the album. The additional differences from the album cover and the advert is that there is more text such as quotes by magazines and ratings. The advertisement also shows the date that the album will be out on stores. The purpose of the quotes and ratings is to show the audience what some of the biggest names in the music industry thought about the album. This would increase make the audience try and see if they agree and buy the album.

Using the colour balance, balanced out the colour of the main image according to the size and font. Some of the text is written on white font therefore its important that this information can be read clearly.

Digipak: Album

Below is my album for my music video. I have used one image; a leaf. From this one image, i have taken sections of it to be used for the back cover, front cover and on the inside. I have edited the images in Adobe Photoshop. This was a challenge because I'm not very familiar with this program.

The album cover reflects the atmosphere created in my music video.
